What is it about
What we choose to remember, and how we grieve, is never neutral. Colonial power works not only through what it destroys but through what it makes unmournable — whose deaths are marked, whose losses are allowed to become history, and whose disappear without a trace.
This workshop looked at how grief and remembrance function together, and why the decision of what to remember is one of the most consequential decolonial acts available to us. Drawing on the Ukrainian context and on the stages of decolonization described in my book, we will ask what it means to reclaim the right to mourn on one’s own terms.

Mariam Naiem
Mariam Naiem is a Ukrainian cultural researcher and writer of Afghan descent. She is the author of How to Breathe Freely: A Guide to Decolonization (Laboratoria), shortlisted for the KBU Awards, Ukraine’s national non-fiction book prize, and co-author of the graphic novel A Brief History of a Long War, published in eleven languages including editions by Penguin Random House and Hachette Livre. She has contributed to Decolonization: Essays from Ukraine (Komora), and her writing has appeared in Politico Europe and other outlets. Her work on otherness draws on her own experience of growing up as a visible minority in Ukraine.

Nadja Sieffert is a friend and a colleague from Coopera e.V. We have organised an educational trip to Moldova together and hope to cooperate further within this project and others.

Educat – Educational Collective
Educat e.V. is a collective of education workers from Dresden, Rostock and Berlin, who do diversity- conscious and critical education, work on remembrance and emancipatory and experimental educational formats. Together with a lot of partners and comrades Educat is facilitating Cultures of Remembrance since 2021.
Project partners
The project has been carried and inspired by a huge network of comrades, activists, artists and educators. For the recent episode of “Cultures of Remembrance” together with Educat Collective, there is Art Platforma, Human Constanta, Prismatica, Queer Cafe, Moldox Association and Solidarity Collectives involved as main partners.
