As final event of “Decolonising Cultures of Remembrance” project, we invite you to a weekend of exhibition, discussions and workshops in Fürstenberg/Havel, Brandenburg, 1 hour north of Berlin (Germany).

Exhibition Opening // Guided tour with introduction

Friday October 9, 6pm – Common Threads. An exhibition on transition of remembrance cultures featuring works from Belarus, Moldova, Ukraine and Eastern Germany

The exhibition is a collection of works by artists and collectives from Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus and Germany. Some of them were created during our educational trip to Moldova in April 2026 as part of the “Decolonising Cultures of Remembrance” project. Following an introduction and a presentation of the works, there will be time to explore the exhibition. Some of the artists will be present and available for conversation. Free drinks and snacks will be provided.

After the official opening of the exhibition there will be an open talk with Solidarity Collectives.

About the Talk

In recent years, distorted ideas of anti-militarism and anti-imperialism have led to attacks on those resisting imperial aggression. Soviet nostalgia has been used to justify the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the war crimes committed by the Russian army.

In short: The talk will explore how ideas about war and anti-imperialism can be misused to justify Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. And what Solidarity means to those directly affected by the war.

We will discuss the experiences of the modern Ukrainian left, which has had to deal with sabotage and smear campaigns while advocating for international support. We will also talk about how anti-militarism and anti-imperialism can lose their meaning and be used to legitimise war. Often, people writing about war and defeatism do so from the safety of homes far removed from destruction, displacement and violence.

This talk will examine the growing European tendency to view war as an abstract geopolitical issue rather than a lived experience. What does solidarity mean when those affected by war are not just the subjects of political analysis, but active participants in the struggle to survive and resist?

About the workshop

Disappearance is the digital norm: websites, databases and social media accounts vanish when funding ends, contracts expire, or platforms close. This affects critical heritage projects especially hard — sites like Dekoloniale.de (Berlin’s decolonial memory project, now unfunded) or Digitalbenin.org, whose dynamic, complex content is too rich for automated tools like the Wayback Machine to properly capture.

In short: In this workshop we have a look together how cultural projects and activists kann keep their websites, research, and digital archives accessible for the future.

This workshop looks at how cultural and research projects — even with limited funding or technical resources — can keep their content discoverable and accessible for the future. We’ll cover practical, low-barrier approaches: open data repositories, web archiving basics, and using Wikidata as a shared, networked finding aid for the internet. No prior knowledge of web archiving or data management needed — the workshop is aimed at cultural practitioners and activists. The goal is that everyone leaves having done at least one small, concrete action themselves — a starting point for pulling different websites together and merging digital archives.

About the workshop

In this workshop participants will create small, alternative memorials for a personal story, person, place, relationship or moment they want to remember. We will use natural materials and think together about what we choose to remember publicly, whose stories become monuments, and whether a memorial really needs to be permanent to matter.

In short: The workshop invites participants to create small memorials from natural materials while exploring personal memories, queer identity, activism, and how we remember people and stories.

If participants agree, their works can become part of the exhibition. The facilitator of the workshop will also share their own experience as a queer person and grassroot activist from Belarus, and how they started looking at natural spaces and materials as alternative spaces for communication, connection and leaving traces of existence even under repression.

• content: We are gonna talk about personal experiences that might include also discriminatory or hurtful content. Please take care of yourself and each other.
• the place: We will meet in a garden that is not fully wheelchair accessible. If it gets cold will go to a creative room, which is 5-10 mins walk from the garden. To enter the room you have to climb 3 steps.

Exhibition Closing // Last Guided Tour and Movie Screening

We invite you to the closing event of our exhibition, where we want together with you to celebrate the result of our work. Initators, activists and artists share some sparks from the project. Let’s spend a nice time together <3! After a short speech there will be a last guided tour through the exhibition followed by a movie screening from our Moldovan partner “Moldox”. One movie about Gagauzia, one about questions on a possible future of Moldova. We will provide free drinks and finger food for the evening as well.

Initiators

Educat – Educational Collective

Educat e.V. is a collective of education workers from Dresden, Rostock and Berlin, who do diversity- conscious and critical education, work on remembrance and emancipatory and experimental educational formats. Together with a lot of partners Educat is initiator of “Cultures of Remembrance”. Since 2021 the project brought together artists and activists in Greece, Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Germany and Poland. There is an ongoing online exhibition and changing shortterm offline exhibitions.

The project has been carried and inspired by a huge network of comrades, activists, artists and educators. For the recent episode of “Cultures of Remembrance” together with Educat Collective, there is Art Platforma, Human Constanta, Prismatica, Queer Cafe, Moldox Association and Solidarity Collectives involved as main partners.
