Final Event of Decolonising Cultures of Remembrance project

As final event of “Decolonising Cultures of Remembrance” project, we invite you to a weekend of exhibition, workshops and walks in Fürstenberg/Havel, Brandenburg, 1 hour north of Berlin (Germany).

Vernissage, Exhibition opening – 9th October, 6 pm

The exhibition is a collection of works by artists and collectives from Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus and Germany. Some of them were created during our educational trip to Moldova in April 2026 as part of the “Decolonizing Cultures of Remembrance” project. Following an introduction and a presentation of the works, there will be time to explore the exhibition. Some of the artists will be present and available for conversation. Free drinks and snacks will be provided.

After the official opening of the exhibition there will be an open talk with Solidarity Collectives.

Leaving Traces – Digital Archiving of the Remembrance Work Projects // Workshop

About the workshop

Disappearance is the digital norm: websites, databases and social media accounts vanish when funding ends, contracts expire, or platforms close. This affects critical heritage projects especially hard — sites like Dekoloniale.de (Berlin’s decolonial memory project, now unfunded) or Digitalbenin.org, whose dynamic, complex content is too rich for automated tools like the Wayback Machine to properly capture.

This workshop looks at how cultural and research projects — even with limited funding or technical resources — can keep their content discoverable and accessible for the future. We’ll cover practical, low-barrier approaches: open data repositories, web archiving basics, and using Wikidata as a shared, networked finding aid for the internet. No prior knowledge of web archiving or data management needed — the workshop is aimed at cultural practitioners and activists. The goal is that everyone leaves having done at least one small, concrete action themselves — a starting point for pulling different websites together and merging digital archives.

About the workshop

In this workshop participants will create small, alternative memorials for a personal story, person, place, relationship or moment they want to remember. We will use natural materials and think together about what we choose to remember publicly, whose stories become monuments, and whether a memorial really needs to be permanent to matter. If participants agree, their works can become part of the exhibition. The facilitator of the workshop will also share their own experience as a queer person and grassroot activist from Belarus, and how they started looking at natural spaces and materials as alternative spaces for communication, connection and leaving traces of existence even under repression.

We invite you to the closing event of our exhibition, where we want together with you to celebrate the result of our work. We want to share some sparks from the project with you and spend a nice time together. After a short speech there will be a last guided tour through the exhibition followed by a movie screening from our Moldovan partner “Moldox”. We will provide free drinks and finger food for the evening as well.

Educat – Educational Collective

Educat e.V. is a collective of education workers from Dresden, Rostock and Berlin, who do diversity- conscious and critical education, work on remembrance and emancipatory and experimental educational formats. Together with a lot of partners and comrades Educat is facilitating Cultures of Remembrance since 2021.
